FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 8, 2010 -- General Growth Properties, owner of Honolulu’s Ala Moana Center and Ward Centers, on Thursday said construction has resumed on a new 7-level parking garage at Queen and Auahi Streets that will serve visitors to Ward Centers and other nearby properties.
Completion of the 850-space parking garage will proceed as rapidly as possible, subject to factors such as timely delivery of needed materials and supplies.
Construction of the structure as originally conceived stopped in December 2008. The company said it is in active discussions with potential tenants who are interested in retail space that could become a part of the structure.
Albert C. Kobayashi, Inc., which started construction of the building, will remain as general contractor.
Ward Centers offers charming one-of-a-kind shops, fashion-forward boutiques, popular national stores and entertainment. It features a farmers market with an array of fresh island food and produce. Popular national brands include Nordstrom Rack, Birkenstock, Brookstone and Borders Books & Music.
Throughout the construction project’s history, GGP and its consultants worked closely with native Hawaiian cultural descendants, State Historic Preservation Division and Oahu Island Burial Council to ensure that cultural traditions are fully honored and respected. Kahu Kordell Kekoa presided over a private blessing of the site on July 7, prior to resumption of construction.
