Native Books/Na Mea Hawaii


Filled with the best locally made gifts, clothing, food and art as well as the most complete collection of books about Hawaii and the Pacific. Featured Artists include Nake'u Awai, Skinny Dip, The Lauhala Lady, Forever Kauai Niihau Shell Lei Collection, bete mu'u and the work of Mapuana. The store also hosts Na Mele Nei, first Sunday of the month live music concerts from 1p-3p. A section of hula implements and pa'u skirts has been added, a section of Hawaiian weapons, medicinal plants and the Aupuni artwall featuring contemporary Hawaiian artists.

NA MELE NEI CONCERT - 1st Sundays

Now in its sixth year, the monthly Na Mele Nei First Sunday Concert hosted by Ellen Martinez and sponsored by Na Mea Hawai’i, continues to showcase home grown local musicians, from traditional ‘ukulele to slack key guitar to contemporary. Grab a plate lunch of Korean, Japanese, Chinese or local favorites at the Ward food court and enjoy the music. Each month, a special guest artist or group will perform, followed by the Na Mele Nei Backyard Gang who promises a delightful island style afternoon with Hawaiian music, hula and stories. Free concert at the Ward Warehouse amphitheater, every 1st Sunday of the month from 1pm to 3pm.

Stop by the entrance of Native Books and meet our talented group of artisans working on their latest projects - just watch or better yet, JOIN IN! Solomon Apio shares stone and wood carving while Ka’iulani deSilva and Aunty Verna Takashima demonstrate tapa making.  12pm - 4pm

Mondays & Fridays - Lau Hala Weaving
9am - 2pm
Ongoing weaving sessions offer lau hala weaving and fellowship.  There is no charge to weave -- bring your projects, questions and ulana!  For more information and registration, please call Gwen at 228-3261.
 
MondaysLei Hulu (Feather) Workshops
5:30pm  –  9pm
Students learn the traditional craft of Hawaiian featherwork through projects such as lei hulu (feather lei), kahili (feather standard) and other hulu items.  Classes are $50 per month or $25 per lesson. Saturdays - Beginning Adult ‘Ukulele Classes
9:30am to10:30am
You gotta start "strumwhere".  Have fun learning how to play the 'ukulele with Aunty Puanani Higgins. Please bring your own 'ukulele. Free. For more info, call 596-8885.
