What stripes were to spring and summer, plaid is to fall. That means it’s everywhere. Though fall plaid fashions might be easy to find, it’s not always the easiest pattern to wear the right way. We’ve put together some plaid dos and don’ts to start your fall season off in good tartan spirit.
DO:
1. Experiment with color. Don’t worry about the plaid being a bit loud. It’s very in style.
2. Focus your outfit around one bold plaid. Let nothing else compete.
3. Try one plaid accessory if you’re timid.
4. Pair a plaid shirt with solid colored pants for a smart, together look.
5. Try a plaid tie with a neutral suit.
6. Wear a solid, colored shirt inside of a larger plaid shirt for fall. Pair them with denim.
7. For an Indian Summer vibe, try a pair of plaid shorts with a smart, tucked in white shirt and loafers. You might try even adding a skinny tie.
DON’T:
1. Pair plaid with plaid. Only one plaid piece should be the star of the show.
2. Pair plaid with other prints. Mixing prints comes in and out of style. With plaid, it’s never a good idea.
3. Wear pastel plaid in the winter. It looks out of place.
4. Wear a plaid shirt tucked it. It just never looks right.
