How to mix masculine and feminine design styles…

Is there anything more fun than moving in with your significant other? While eating dinner from takeout boxes on the floor might sound romantic, blending your furniture and décor to please both sexes and styles is anything but. Read on to find out what to keep, what to chuck, and more importantly, how to compromise between bachelor pad and boudoir.

Before you begin, take an inventory of what you both possess, and see if you can find a common theme. Do some careful editing of the items that might have sentimental value to each of you, and purge the rest.

When mixing masculine and feminine styles, the key is to create a balance, like yin and yang. If he is holding onto his leather recliner, top it off with a woven afghan. Industrial dining tables are on trend, and can be warmed up with upholstered chairs or an antique chandelier.

When color and texture come into play, it’s important to find a happy medium between the extremes of dark man cave and pastel dollhouse. Juxtapose an inky hued sofa with natural linen drapes, fine silk sheets with raw wood nightstands.

As for ornamentation, opt for spicy scented candles, packaged in chic steel. Switch out fresh flowers for indoor plants and willow branches. Accents like canvas and stripes are unisex, and brass hardware is at once graceful and gentlemanly.

Now you can get back to the fun part and go shopping for investment pieces! OK, fun for you…
