For the most part, fashion is cyclical (ahem, Mom jeans). But every now and then, a trend emerges that even the most daring fashionista wouldn’t, well, dare try. The spring shows had their fair share of unflattering fads: baggy overalls, puffy pirate sleeves and fur-trimmed Birkenstocks, to name a few.
Fear not. Maintaining a fashion-forward wardrobe is not as scary as it may seem. This season saw many trends that not only look good on models, but mere mortals like us, too. Read on to find out how to turn catwalk looks into sidewalk styles.
Orange is the New Black
No, don’t go getting yourself arrested. This hue was on fire this season at DKNY, Tracy Reese and Richard Chai. To avoid looking like a piece of fruit, eschew an entirely orange outfit for stripes, or simply accessorize with a vivid bag or heel.
Flower Power
Wondering when to rock florals other than at a music festival? Rebecca Taylor’s watercolor shirtdress is a sophisticated take on the trend. Invest in a versatile piece like this that can be belted, topped off with a cardigan or tucked into jeans for unique looks. Dark prints like those seen at Marni are an edgy way to embrace florals in the evening, and printed trousers like Stella McCartney’s make office attire more feminine.
Cream of the Crop
Crop tops aren’t for the faint of heart. Luckily this season’s styles show minimal midriff. The key is to wear voluminous tops and/or high-wasted pants that meet in the middle. Alexander Wang only showed a sliver of skin, and Nicole Miller even less.
Art Star
Good thing we didn’t toss those paint-splattered pants because arty designs are on trend for spring—from bold brushstrokes at Rachel Comey to graphic patterns at Prabal Gurung. Try mixing and matching patterns like the pros at Missoni for a look bound to turn heads, or make a statement like Isa Arfen did with a singular work of art on a white dress.
